I was organizing my iPod play lists the other day and I kept obsessing on how to categorize the songs. As I went through each song in my music library, a lot of memories came flooding back. I’m sure everyone of us has certain songs for certain moments of our lives. Songs that when you hear them, send an unexplainable almost nauseating feeling in your stomach, as you try to remember that particular scene in your life where that song played in your head – the volume slowly picking up, drowning the dialogues, the music takes you through a flash back of moments (whether you like it or not) – and as the song fades to an end, a bittersweet smile creeps on your lips, as you are brought back to the present… I thought I’d share with you some of the songs that make up the original soundtrack of the movie of my life :)
Track 1 – “Where is thumbkin?” (First day of nursery school, I cried because I was so afraid of the teacher-nuns. Also, my mom forced me to ride the school bus alone! After 3 days, I dropped out of nursery class, skipped the entire school year, and jumpstarted to kindergarten)
Track 2 – “Nothing’s gonna change my love for you by Glenn Medeiros” (My first crush :) I don’t know why this song reminds me of him – obviously I was too young at that time to actually understand the meaning of this song!)
Track 3 – “Footloose” (Performing on stage for our school’s foundation day, when I was in grade 2. I couldn’t forget it because the power went out at the height of the song where we were supposed to jump when Kenny Loggins shouts ‘Footloose!’– it was just so funny. And of course, it has taken a whole new meaning for me now, because my dance partner at that time is now the love of my life :) )
Track 4 – “Chiquitita” (Being a new student when I was in grade 4. One of my “new friends” sang like a nightingale, and she sang this song in a singing contest)
Track 5 – “Waterfalls by TLC” + “Melt Away by Mariah C” (Fast forward to high school, singing our hearts out during our late night Tagaytay misadventures, my friend Ivy drove their van without permission, without a license and without directions! – we didn’t even know how to get there)
Track 6 – “Out of reach by Gabrielle” (I had a guy friend in high school and our relationship was just so confusing… it went from nothing to something and back to nothing – still haven’t figured it out, but I guess that’s just the way its gonna be, and listening to this song has helped me accept that)
Track 7 – “Can I get a… by Jay-Z” (I used to be one of the boys and most days we spent driving around with no specific destination with the stereo blasting, our stomachs’ grumbling – haha – trying to get by and have fun on college allowance :) that was THE life)
Track 8 – “Heartbreaker by Mariah C” (I went out with this guy, when he just “dumped” his girlfriend, and I even felt a bit proud being the “new” girl – until the dice rolled again and before I knew it, I was the “new dumped” girl and there was a “newer girl.” But now when I think about it, I feel lucky being dumped, because now, I’m not just the “new girl” in someone else’s life – in fact, I’m THE girl! :) )
Track 9 – “Beautiful Ones by Suede” + “Feeling So Good by J.Lo” + “Best Days by Juice” (having had enough of riding in cars with boys and all the trouble and heartaches that came along with it, I was so happy to find my sanctuary in the loving arms of my bestest girlfriends)
Track 10 – “Need to be next to you by Leigh Nash” + “Hey look at the sun by Sergio Mendes/Sitti” + “Lets Stay Together by Al Green/BoyzIIMen” (Needless to say, the songs that remind me of my sweetie – Paul :) Songs that will probably play in the soundtrack of our wedding video! Haha :) But for now, we’re just happy singing these songs together even if we’re both off-key!)
